The Commission has taken an initiative to submit a recast for the Late Payments directive, as the previous directive was insufficient to tackle the problem of late payments across the EU. The main reasons for this proposal are to reduce the number of late payments in commercial transactions, to shorten the payment period for public administrations and to sustainably reinforce the incentives for public administrations to pay on time.

During this Breakfast the late payments from a public authority are of particular interest. This issue is especially frustrating because most public authorities do not face the same financing constraints as businesses, therefore late payments in their case can be avoided. This regulation seeks to sanction this negligence more severely. During the Business Breakfast, the results of a survey conducted by MBB with the members of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry and the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association will be presented in the form of a position paper to the Government, represented through the Ministry of Finance, the Economy and Investment.

The Business Breakfast will be held: on the 1st October 2009, between 8.00-10.00 at the Hotel Phoenicia, Floriana
